The Story Still Comes First: Why I Use AI to Help Businesses Tell Better Ones

I picked up my first camera long before anyone talked about artificial intelligence. Over two and a half decades in digital media, I've watched film give way to digital, websites give way to social feeds, and print give way to email and video. Every few years a new tool arrives promising to change everything.

Artificial intelligence is the biggest of those shifts I've seen. But the lesson I keep coming back to is the same one I learned at the very beginning: the tool is never the point. The story is the point, and the people that story is for.

That's why I call myself a creative storyteller who leverages AI for the better. It's also why I've started helping businesses of every size figure out how to do the same.

A storyteller first

For ten years I served as a U.S. Coast Guard Public Affairs Officer and photojournalist. I responded to national emergencies, spent months at sea in the Bering Sea, and learned to find the one detail that carries a whole story. When something big is happening, you don't have time to waste on the wrong shot or the wrong words. You learn to see clearly and tell the truth well.

Since then I've photographed hundreds of weddings, been recognized as a World Top 10 Off-Camera Flash Photographer, and told stories through every medium I could get my hands on: websites, email, written stories, print, social media, photo and video. I believe every one of those mediums matters. A well-crafted email can move someone as deeply as a film. A thoughtful website can welcome someone as warmly as a handshake.

A builder, too

Storytelling taught me to see people. Technology taught me to serve them at scale. I earned my MS in Digital Marketing from Full Sail University, and I've built and shipped three production software platforms from the ground up using Next.js, React, TypeScript and PostgreSQL. I know what it takes to turn an idea into a working system, and I know how easily the people at the center of that system can get lost along the way.

That combination is rare, and it's exactly what this moment calls for. AI sits right where creativity and technology meet.

What "AI for the better" means to me

There's a lot of fear around AI, and some of it is earned. It can flood the world with forgettable content. It can make brands sound like everyone else. It can tempt businesses to cut the human out of the very work that was supposed to connect them to people.

I see it differently. Used well, AI doesn't replace the storyteller. It frees the storyteller to do more of what only a person can do.

  • It clears the busywork. Drafting variations, organizing research, summarizing feedback and resizing assets for every channel can take hours. AI can handle much of that in minutes, so your team spends its time on ideas and relationships.

  • It helps small teams compete. A business with three people can now produce the kind of consistent, multi-channel storytelling that once needed a full agency.

  • It sharpens, rather than replaces, your voice. The best results come when AI works from a clear understanding of who you are and who you serve. That understanding has to come from people.

  • It keeps people at the center. Every system I design starts with one question: how does this make life better for the person on the other side?

For me, this isn't only a business philosophy. My faith shapes how I work. I believe the gifts and tools we're given are meant to serve others and point toward something greater than ourselves. Technology is one of those gifts, and I want to use it with integrity, honesty and care.

How I help businesses

Through consulting and advising, I help businesses of all kinds use AI and digital media with purpose. That can look like:

  • Finding your story. Clarifying what makes you different and how to say it in a way people remember.

  • Building an AI-ready content workflow. Choosing the right tools, setting them up around your voice, and training your team to use them well.

  • Connecting your channels. Making your website, email, social media, print and video tell one consistent story instead of five disconnected ones.

  • Designing systems that last. Automations and processes that save time without making your brand feel automated.

  • Advising leaders. Helping you separate the hype from what will actually move your business forward.

Whether you're a local shop, a growing startup, a ministry or an established company, the principles are the same. Know your people. Tell the truth well. Use every tool, including AI, to serve them better.

Let's build something that matters

The businesses that thrive in this new era won't be the ones that produce the most content. They'll be the ones that use these tools to become more human, more helpful and more memorable.

If you're wondering how AI fits into your story, or you're ready to make your digital presence work harder for the people you serve, I'd love to talk. Let's make something that matters.
